This summer we decided to take on the trail challenge put forth by Custer State Park. Each year the park challenges locals and tourists alike to hike eight trails within Custer State Park. On each trial there is a bronze medallion with a symbol and the name of the trail on it. The goal of the challenge is to either take a picture of each medallion or do a rubbing on the trail challenge handout they have available at any of the park’s visitor centers.

Deerfield Lake Hike in the Black Hills

7/9/2018

Deerfield Lake is one of our favorite places to go hiking in the Black Hills of South Dakota because it is so beautiful, remote and with few people around! So it is a great place to go for a long day hike when you don't want to run into very many people!

We hiked the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail #40L, which is about a 12 mile loop hike around the lake. On this particular day it was super hot

I am a big proponent of being connected with your community! One of the many reasons I love living here is that each community in the Black Hills area provides so many different opportunities to enjoy this beautiful place that are absolutely free of cost!

The Outdoor Campus - West is one of my favorite places to learn about a variety of topics related to the outdoors. Each season they post a new list of classes for all different age groups to learn about things like archery, orienteering, shooting, fishing, wilderness

What better way to start the morning off than enjoying a hike with a friend! Buzzard's Roost is one of my favorite hiking places near Rapid City because it is located so close to town and offers beautiful vistas once you reach the top!

This is a very popular hiking spot so plan accordingly if you don't want to be bogged down by a ton of other people. I suggest to

There is something about the majestic beauty of a sunny winter day, gliding through the deep snow on a pair of cross country skis. Besides the wind, it was just a perfect afternoon to enjoy some exercise and time with friends.

We tried a new trail - Sunny Meadows, which is part of the Eagle Cliff trails near Lead, SD. This trail head is 9.4 miles from the

Dead Ox Trail - Cross Country Skiing

Well, we are back on Dead Ox trail! We were in the area, with our cross country gear, and wanted to spend a little time back on the Dead Ox trail in Lead, SD. It was such a beautiful winter day that we just couldn't help ourselves. Being back on this trail in skis makes this a whole different experience. We only had an hour so we were unable to complete the loop we wanted to when we were out here in December BUT we didn't run into any people and no snow this time around, so that was a treat!

The snow was packed perfectly for cross country skiing and we made good time! My fiance is in this video demonstrating the trail conditions!

Lead, South Dakota is such a beautiful area but I had not spent any time hiking this area of the Black Hills in the past, but after today I will be remedying that! I started a backpacking group on Facebook (Black Hills Backpackers) right around the time I moved out here and it is geared towards backpacking, of course, but in the winter months we try to get people together for an outing once a month.

Badlands National Park - Summer

7/23/2017

Being one of only two national parks in South Dakota, the Badlands draw people from all over the world to view its beauty. The national park protects 244,000 acres and is home to bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets. There is a bounty of mixed-grass prairie and my favorite part about the park is that it looks totally different during different times of the year! View my post from May of 2017 to see what I mean.

Visiting the Badlands National Park in the Spring is completely different than seeing it in the summer! This was actually my first time being at the park when all the grass was green with all of the wild flowers blooming. I HIGHLY recommend visiting the park at this time of year. It was not crazy hot, not too many people and there was so much more to see!
