Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge

What's in Your Pack?

When out for an adventure, no matter the length, it is important to be prepared! Whether on a short day hike or a 2 week backcountry trip, the type of pack you bring and the gear you have with you can make or break your get-away! So be prepared for your next excursion and see what is recommended!

PACK
For a day hike, a pack that is about 18 – 25L normally works the best. It just depends on how much stuff you like to carry or if you are carrying gear for you and your hiking partner. I find the Osprey Hikelight 18L is just perfect for me because it has a frame which keeps the pack off my back and allows for better ventilation while on the trail. Also, there are a few areas to store gear.

Maroon Bells - Aspen, Colorado

I was in Aspen, CO for a work conference and had the opportunity to go to Maroon Bells, which is only a 20 minute drive from Aspen. I am not one for crowds AT ALL and since there were a whole slew of people right at Maroon Lake, I decided to head up to Crater Lake. I was super ticked at myself because I forgot my point-and-shoot camera at home. So, I apologize these photos aren't as crisp and clear as I would normally post.

The Custer Trail Challenge

This summer we decided to take on the trail challenge put forth by Custer State Park. Each year the park challenges locals and tourists alike to hike eight trails within Custer State Park. On each trial there is a bronze medallion with a symbol and the name of the trail on it. The goal of the challenge is to either take a picture of each medallion or do a rubbing on the trail challenge handout they have available at any of the park’s visitor centers.

Deerfield Lake Hike in the Black Hills

Deerfield Lake is one of our favorite places to go hiking in the Black Hills of South Dakota because it is so beautiful, remote and with few people around! So it is a great place to go for a long day hike when you don't want to run into very many people!

We hiked the Deerfield Lake Loop Trail #40L, which is about a 12 mile loop hike around the lake. On this particular day it was super hot

Lake Tahoe Area Ski Trip

For our ski trip this year we decided to go to the Lake Tahoe area in California. We flew into Reno, NV and rented a vehicle to drive down to our cute little cabin in the woods just outside of Tahoma, CA. We choose this rental due to location since we knew we would go to Squaw Valley | Alpine Meadows due to its popularity and reputation (1960 Winter Olympics). When we planned the trip, a few months ahead of time, we weren't sure what the snow conditions would be when we would be visiting in early February so we choose a cabin rental that would give us flexibility to most of the ski resorts in the area (within a 2 hour drive).

Buzzard's Roost Morning Hike

Lead, South Dakota is such a beautiful area but I had not spent any time hiking this area of the Black Hills in the past, but after today I will be remedying that! I started a backpacking group on Facebook (Black Hills Backpackers) right around the time I moved out here and it is geared towards backpacking, of course, but in the winter months we try to get people together for an outing once a month.

Badlands National Park - Summer

Being one of only two national parks in South Dakota, the Badlands draw people from all over the world to view its beauty. The national park protects 244,000 acres and is home to bison, bighorn sheep, prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets. There is a bounty of mixed-grass prairie and my favorite part about the park is that it looks totally different during different times of the year! View my post from May of 2017 to see what I mean.

Part 2 - Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Part 2 of our journey brought us to Sequoia National Park. We arrived on Tuesday in the late afternoon, purchased a National Parks Annual Pass and headed out to see if we could find a campsite. We lucked out and found a spot in Potwisha Campground. Since we just bought the annual pass, we got a nice discount on the cost of the campsite. I do love a deal!

Badlands National Park - Spring

Visiting the Badlands National Park in the Spring is completely different than seeing it in the summer! This was actually my first time being at the park when all the grass was green with all of the wild flowers blooming. I HIGHLY recommend visiting the park at this time of year. It was not crazy hot, not too many people and there was so much more to see!
