I am Adopted!

Hello world! My name is Sammy and I am the newest addition to the Karras household! I was adopted last August while I was sitting outside of PetSmart watching all these humans and furry animals go by. I was just wagging my tail and trying to look as cute as possible because I could tell something BIG was going to happen that day! I was rescued by Friends of Pets out of Chadron, NE. They saved me from a kill shelter out of New Mexico. It was scary living on the street when I was really little.
I was hungry and cold a lot. I sure was glad when the humans brought me to the ranch in Chadron. It was a scary journey because I didn’t know what was going on but when I ended up on a ranch, I was pretty happy. I mean who wouldn’t like running free and eating regularly and getting to play with other dogs? I didn’t have to scrounge for every meal. It was so nice!
But then one day, the ranch lady put me in the truck and drove me up to the PetSmart in Rapid City. And there I was, this little Red Heeler mix dog, cute as a button, just waiting for someone to love me. I mean, I am a bit of a handful because I REALLY love to cuddle. Some would even say I’m an aggressive cuddler. But what do they know? Some dogs just need to get as close as physically possible to snuggle. I mean, yes, I do use all of my body weight and full muscle strength to get as close as possible, all while I’m wagging my tail like crazy and licking you to death. But come on, who doesn’t love that? I mean, yes, you may push me away and shield your face from my tongue. But I know you don’t mean it. I know you are just kidding around. Even when you get mad and yell at me, I know, deep, deep, down, you really love when I accidentally claw your face, or step on your head, or land on our crouch and make you yell in pain. Because you know I didn’t mean to hurt you. I know, that you know, that I LOVE YOU!!

But I digress, so there I am, at PetSmart, with my best “adorable” face on and here walks up a couple of humans with a yellow Labrador dog. I’ve met quite a few dogs in my short life and let me tell you that, to date, labs are my favorite breed! So I was all excited to meet this dog, her name is Pippie and I liked her right away. Then the human lady started petting me and I liked her TOO. The man seems pretty nice, and he smelled good! The lady took me for a little walk and I was on my BEST behavior because I could tell they were nice people. I walked like a champ and looked up at the lady with my happiest little doggie smile and she told me later that was the moment she knew they were going to adopt me! Mission accomplished!

I found out later that they wanted to get another dog because their four year old Labrador wanted a friend, that’s my sister Pippie! She is super good at letting the humans know what she wants. She told them she was lonely and wanted a friend. So for about 6 months they debated about whether or not to get another dog. Then a couple months after their wedding they decided to go find a dog at the shelter.
The local shelter in Rapid City wasn’t open yet on the Saturday morning they decided to go and get another dog so that’s how they ended up at PetSmart. After I was adopted, they changed my name. My name used to be Samson but the lady human said that was too serious of a name for me. So they re-named me Sammy because I am so cute and playful. Pippie wasn’t too sure about me at first. I think it was because she was just too excited to have me around that she would become overwhelmed and would need some time to herself to calm down.

I guess laying in the squishy dog bed with your eyes closed is the way to do that. I don’t know, I’m more of a, lay completely sprawled on top of the humans and have my butt in their face, sort of relaxer. It serves multiple purposes…I get to enjoy lots of pets, stay warm with their body heat, all while watching the door to see if anything is happening. I like to stay in the know!

So yeah, that’s pretty much my story! I will be one years old in February and am really looking forward to all the fun stuff this year has in store for me. I can definitely tell it’s going to be a big year!
