Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

We had the pleasure to spend a couple days in Colonial Williamsburg, which is a small historical area in Williamsburg, Virginia. I had been to this area before with my mom a few years ago and I loved it so much I had to bring my husband with since he also loves history!

Colonial Williamsburg is a wonderful place to learn about the history of this country. Essentially, it is about an 11 block area that has been preserved ​and restored to the setting of Virginia's 18th-century capitol. 

The restoration began in 1926 by the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. Presently about 85% of the 18th-century capital's original area is restored. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not-for-profit educational institution that does not receive regular or federal funding.

There are historical actors that are throughout the restored capital and they share all about what it would have been like in that time period. In addition, there was a TON of tours that are about a half an hour long that are scripted by the actors. We went to a lot of them but our favorite two were the Capitol Building and the Famous Barber of York. We put together a few podcasts (Episodes 21 - 25) from our time in Colonial Williamsburg in you wanted to get a taste of what it is like when visiting!

You do have to purchase tickets, of course, when you go but it is actually pretty affordable considering you are there from 9am - 5pm and can walk around and learn the WHOLE day! There is a single-day or multiday ticket (three day pass) that is available. The best bang for your buck is the multiday pass for $50.99, if you just have time for Colonial Williamsburg. But I would highly recommend the America's Historic Triangle ticket because it allows you to visit Colonial Williamsburg sites, Historic Jamestowne, Jamestown Settlement, and the Yorktown Battlefield  (seven day pass). My mom and I purchased that pass and LOVED it since each historic area is very different.

When you are visiting these wonderful locations, make sure to stop in the actual towns to enjoy the local food and shops. Just ask the locals where their favorite spots are for food and cross check it with Google reviews to make sure it is actually delicious. When I travel I try to stick with 4.5 stars or above and 9 times out of 10 the food is very good.
