The restoration began in 1926 by the philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. Presently about 85% of the 18th-century capital's original area is restored. The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is a private, not-for-profit educational institution that does not receive regular or federal funding. There are historical actors that are throughout the restored capital and they share all about what it would have been like in that time period. In addition, there was a TON of tours that are about a half an hour long that are scripted by the actors. We went to a lot of them but our favorite two were the Capitol Building and the Famous Barber of York. We put together a few podcasts (Episodes 21 - 25) from our time in Colonial Williamsburg in you wanted to get a taste of what it is like when visiting!
