As we are preparing for our thru hike of the Appalachian Trail we are very focused on what food we are bringing. Food is a HUGE component for a successful trip. And it’s not just the type of food, but the right types of foods so you have proper nutrition for your body to function at its best. Also, when on a budget, making our own meals is drastically cheaper than buying prepared dehydrated meals. So we are going to talk about what we will be eating when doing our long distance hike.
This was the one time of year my mom would make them and the tradition has always held a special place in my heart. I don’t know how we ended up calling them “ciggie minnies” but it started when we were little and just stuck!
As my sisters and I got older we had to learn how to make the ciggie minnies as well. I think it was at some point in college where my mom and I had a “bake off” to see who made the best ciggie minnie rolls. We even had unbiased judges and I was deemed the master ciggie minnie roll maker! Since then, it has been my job to make them each year at Christmas.
This is Jake's favorite cookie and I have made it for him every Christmas since we first started dating. He grew up enjoying this German cookie and likes it best when it is cooked until it is super hard, and then he dunks it in coffee to soften it!
My new favorite apple sauce recipe is so very simple. I love it because it is SO easy to throw together and a relatively fast way to use up a ton of apples. My mom and neighbor were nice enough to give us a whole slew of delicious apples so I tweeted the recipe I found off of Pinterest and the results were divine!
